A verbal conversation is a huge part of our lives. However, language holds more purposes than just communication. Language also means to its speakers’ their speakers’ identity, history. I witnessed this when I watched The Linguistics. The two language saviors traveled to Bolivia, Arizona, and Europe to document dying languages. I thing I noticed is that language can have historical significance including how it came about, and changed through war, cultures mixing and language planning.
It is important to hang on to a language because it can broaden a speaker’s awareness to. For example, where I grew up in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania English was the dominant language. Coming to New York and meeting people that spoke more than one language can has blown my mind. When using English for all my mind and coming to New York I never realized how diverse the world is, just by looking at language.
It is very important to learn another language, whether it is from your parents’ orgin or a language that sounds interesting to you. It is important to learn another language because like mentioned previously, it can broaden your awareness of the diversity in the world and also you’re getting the ability to reach out and communicate to a group of people you normally wouldn’t reach out to, if you had not learned their language.
To protect a linguistic group’s right to its own language and community should allow multiple languages to be taught in school. Having school taught in different languages will allow the speakers to hold on their language as they move process through school, but also other speakers can learn languages that they wouldn’t hear in their home or with their friends. is diversity in schools, and public areas.
